For Love Key: The History of the Waters

For Love Key: The History of the Waters

As a barge cruiser, the canal system is a complicated and balanced engineering feat. The keystone that supports this water channel is key. Whether run by key owners, followed up by barge owners, or controlled automatically by computer, the key allows fast and easy barge passage through the countryside. Without this engineering miracle, the canal trip is simply not possible. So, how is the key found and what exactly does it do?
When and Why Are They Invented? For Love Key: The History of the Waters

Rivers have long served as important trade and communication networks. However, this network is limited because the ship can not travel deep inland and it is very difficult to travel up through the river. The key, the invention that allowed the ship to gain or lose altitude, was developed by the Chinese in the tenth century and by the Dutch on the thirteenth. The initial “pound” key focuses on filling and drying small sized rooms, and facilitating the construction of the first independent waterway – or canal – that causes worldwide trade expansion. This arrangement also helps ships travel up or down in the domesticated rivers like the Thames.

This centuries-old invention is used today in some of the most important global trade routes – the Panama Canal, for example – and also allows for more relaxed travel, such as barge cruises. For Love Key: The History of the Waters

How do they work?

As we know, this technical miracle is designed to help boats upstream or downstream. If a ship wants to travel upstream, first the bottom gate should be opened so as to let the key drain. Next, the bottom door opened, and the boat could enter the room. After the gates of the lower and lower gates of the water gate are closed, the gate of the upper water door is opened, the water flows in and the water level rises. The boat is gently lifted to the next level and the top door can be opened safely, so the ship can continue its journey. Once again the same process occurs, but vice versa.

Getting Technical: Flights and Ladders

Engineers working with channels often have to cope with sudden changes. This can often not be handled with a single key, leading to a common feature of a channel called ‘flight’. This term refers to a group of 30 keys adjacent to each other, but with a sufficiently wide range between allowing the ship to pass each other. They gradually raise or lower the barge to the appropriate level. Since each room uses water from the above, the flight uses the same amount of water as a single key.

The more popular setting is the stairs; Here the top gate of one room acts as the lower gate above. To help with this process, the side pool is used to adjust the level perfectly in the upper and lower spaces. Of course, the best way to appreciate this amazing engineering feat is from the gentle barge cruise deck.

Part of an experienced barge team, Paul first queued to support a slow-paced barging cruise facility for anyone looking for a unique holiday experience. For Love Key: The History of the Waters

All You Need is Lava: A Volcanic Hawaiian Holiday

All You Need is Lava: A Volcanic Hawaiian Holiday

Endlessly fascinating for their beauty and danger, volcanoes have thrilled us human beings for as long as we can remember. And if lazy days on the beach just aren’t for you, why not try a holiday with a little more excitement and head to the active volcanoes of Hawaii? In fact, the archipelago of Hawaii was created through volcanic activity and this fiery heritage is everywhere you look in the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, USA. Travel insurance experts, however, say it’s safe terrain.
In the park you can get so close to active volcanoes that you can feel the heat from erupting gases and steam as you walk across lava fields in search of indigenous art…

Here are three expeditions you should make in the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park if you want to experience the power of volcanoes first hand:

The Long One

The Crater Rim Trail is a fantastic trail for those who love their hikes with just a soupcon of danger! The trail is over 11 miles long and works itself around the summit of Kilauea, one of the most active volcanoes on Hawaii. Thousands of years old, Kilauea has been active non-stop for the last thirty years. The trail winds through contrasting sceneries of lush, green rainforests and sterile, steaming rockscapes. As you walk, look out for the earth cracks and vents that break the ground’s surface.

If you’re interested in the local culture you’ll want to know that Kilauea is believed to be the home of Pele – goddess of fire and creator of Hawaii. As the name Fire Goddess suggests, the area can be unpredictable and dangerous. With this in mind, be prepared for sudden trail closures. It’s also always advisable to stay on the marked paths and keep away from edges. Make sure you get out USA travel insurance before visiting – in case of an accident you are safely covered.

The Short One

Ha’akulamanu Trail, or the Sulphur Banks Trail, is much shorter, coming in at just over a mile in length. However, you know what they say: good things come in small packages! The intriguing landscape is devoid of trees as the intense underground heat makes it impossible for most roots to grow. The area is known for the beautiful crystal formations formed by escaping gases over many years. The gas is released through earth vents along with groundwater which is turned into steam and hangs in the air.

Just a warning – it does not smell good here! Rotten eggs anyone?

The Arty One

It’s not often that you can enjoy a nature trail and take in some local art on your way. However, nothing about this art is ordinary. The indigenous artwork found cut into Pu’u Loa, or the “Hill of Long Life”, is carved into the cooled volcanic lava of this sacred site. How amazing is that? There are over 23,000 petroglyphs showing a stunning variety of geometric patterns, human representations and images of the travels of the people of Hawaii around the island. A boardwalk allows visitors to easily view the artwork whilst protecting it and maintaining respect for the site.

TOP TIP: Before you embark on any journey, check your insurance! Designed with explorers in mind, Let’s Go Insure’s USA travel insurance will keep you covered on all your wild ventures.

Ready to have a blast? I’ll see you in Hawaii!

World Keratoconus Day 2017

World Keratoconus Day 2017

World Keratoconus Day is an opportunity to raise awareness of this disease and this year falls on November 10th. Keratoconus is a progressive but non-inflammatory corneal disease. Keratoconus is caused by the weakening of collagen fibers that will usually keep the shape like a corneal dome. With this disease the weakened cornea begins to thin out, change shape and bulge out. This bulging and thinning causes the cornea to form a conical shape that can profoundly affect vision.
The early signs of keratoconus often change in the recipe. In addition, many patients experience visual impairment such as glare, halos and double vision caused by changes in the shape of the cornea. Overtime patients with keratoconus see their vision begin to become distorted and opaque, and since this is a progressive disease, these visual symptoms become worse. Many patients with keratoconus tend to be very close to high levels of astigmatism. Initially glasses and contact lenses can help with visual changes but as more glasses and contact lenses disappear, the effect will be very helpful. Opticians tend to refer patients to an ophthalmologist if these signs begin to occur and worsen, the ophthalmologist will then diagnose the condition and design a treatment plan. World Keratoconus Day 2017

Keratoconus can occur for various reasons, but the cause is still unknown. This disease can occur in the family and may develop from an early age, for this reason it is recommended that the eyes of the child be checked by an ophthalmologist if the disease goes in the family. It can also develop in later ages because; Chronic eye rubbing or laser eye surgery (called ectasia) for example. There are also several other medical conditions where the patient may be more likely to develop keratoconus such as; retinitis pigmentosa, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and Down syndrome. World Keratoconus Day 2017

Treatment for keratoconus varies due to the severity of the disease. As mentioned above goggles or soft contact lenses are initially recommended to aid visual changes, but as the progression of the disease moves to hardcore specialist contact lenses or other it may be better to get better vision. This type of contact lenses should be fitted properly and having follow-up to monitor vision and corneal status is very important. If the glasses and various types of contact lenses do not work, and as the disease progresses, a procedure called crosslinking of the corneal collagen may be recommended by a cornea doctor. This procedure, which is now recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), helps slow or stop disease progression. It works by using ultraviolet light and riboflavin (vitamin B2), to help build and straighten weak collagen fibers by creating more crosslinks between the corneal fibers, making them stronger and more jagged. Crosslinking of corneal collagen can be performed in children and adults alike and quickly becomes an ophthalmologist of keratoconus treatment options because of its safety and efficacy. Other options for treating keratoconus may also include corneal ring implants, which help support the corneal nature of the cornea, and phototherapeutic keratoplasty (PTK) may also be suggested. If the disease is too advanced and severe, the above treatment may not be helpful, and the only option for patients to undergo corneal transplantation, this may be a partial or full thickness transplant and only used as a last resort if other treatments. can not help. World Keratoconus Day 2017

Keratoconus is a serious eye disease and can be dazzling if not monitored and treated properly. There is currently no cure for this disease and the only treatment to help slow or stop keratoconus is the cross-linked collagen of the cornea. It is recommended that patients, adults and children, with keratoconus or suspected keratoconus attend their follow-up meetings and keep following the advice of their ophthalmologist or glasses.

Will luxury yachting go green

Will luxury yachting go green

Driven by electric propulsion and a radical aesthetic, the EAU concept electric luxury yacht by Tjep, reimagines a cleaner future for the luxury yacht industry…
The impact of leisure boating on marine environments is a well-documented problem. Even as regulations seek to alleviate the issue, engine emissions and the incorrect disposal of waste by yachts contribute to marine pollution. Dutch designer Frank Tjepkema proposes to veto this with the introduction of the EAU concept electric luxury yacht.

Considering the growing projection of the automobile industry towards electrically-operated vehicles, Frank anticipates the same influence in the yacht building industry. He prophesies that although the pace of progress is extremely low, developments in areas such as electric cargos, hydrogen trucks and electric cars (TESLA) will find their way to the luxury yacht industry ultimately, by increasing the availability of large volume on-board electricity storage and charging points in ports. In such a scenario, questions Frank, “Would it not be nice if the leisure category, where there’s an abundance of capital, would lead the way? Why should enjoyment be combined with heavy pollution?”

Taking a step in the desired direction, Frank has conceptualised EAU to precision – at a length of 63 m, width of 13.5 m and beam of 18 m. Designed to have 100% electric propulsion with a speed of 25 knots, the yacht will host 12 cabins, a swimming pool and a helipad, its hull and superstructure crafted from aluminium. The future for a green yacht industry looks bright since Tjep. has been shortlisted for Yacht Concept over 40 Metres Award in The International Yacht & Aviation Awards 2018.

But, the EAU yacht isn’t just at the technological frontier of this industry; it also floats aesthetic qualities that represent the ultimate in cleanliness. Pushing simplicity and refinement to its limit, the design is inspired by the qualities of water. The design’s most striking element is a water droplet-shaped wheelhouse that floats like an abstract sculpture above the deck. The yacht also uses familiar elements from traditional yacht craftsmanship, such as the way in which wooden planks form the layered lines along the hull of wooden ships.

Unique Facts About the Wildlife of Galapagos

Unique Facts About the Wildlife of Galapagos

Most nature lovers who embark on wildlife holidays in Galapagos are familiar with the archipelago’s most iconic wildlife species, which include the Giant Tortoise, the Lava Lizard, the Marine Iguana, the Galapagos Sea Lion and the Blue-Footed Booby.
But while the wildlife has been studied and documented extensively, from Darwin’s first forays to the scientists who actively work to ensure its conservation into modern times, there are also some lesser-known facts about these wonderfully unique species. For anyone planning wildlife holidays in Galapagos, knowing a few of these before the trip may add another dimension to an already fascinating encounter.

Did You Know?

• The Marine Iguanas found in abundance throughout the archipelago are the world’s only species of marine lizard. The white appearance often seen around their faces is caused by the expulsion of salt from specially adapted glands in their nostrils, which dries and creates a “wig” effect.

• The Galapagos Penguin is the smallest in the world and the only one found north of the Equator. The combination of the cold waters of the Humboldt and Cromwell ocean currents mean it is able to survive in the warmer climate.

• With an average life span of well over a century, the Giant Tortoise lives longer than almost any other vertebrate on the planet. They continue to grow for up to 40 years and can reach a length of over 1.5m and a weight of up to 250kg.

• The most common of all the mammals throughout the islands is the sea lion. The chance to swim and snorkel amongst the curious sea lions is also one of the most sought-after encounters on wildlife holidays in Galapagos. Particularly large colonies are found on Santa Cruz, Isabela and Espanola.

• The Green Sea Turtle found in the waters around the archipelago is a species so old it has been around since before the time of the dinosaurs.

• There are five species of snakes and all of them are endemic to the dry zones of certain islands – although some islands have none. All the species are relatively small (under a metre) and are known as “racers”, due to their ability to move extremely fast. Their only natural predator is the Galapagos Hawk.

• There are four species of boobies that make the islands home. The Blue-footed Booby is renowned for its unique mating dance, where it lifts its feet and wave them in the air, appearing to “dance”, and the Red-footed Booby is the only one to make its nest in the trees and not the ground. The Nazcar Booby is the largest species, while the Masked Booby lives mainly out in the open ocean, returning to land only to breed.

• The Waved Albatross mates for life. There are over 12,000 breeding pairs on the archipelago, which represents the majority of its global population. While the birds depart the islands from December to April, they return to the same place and the same partner every year to breed.

• The term “Darwin’s Finches” actually refers to 15 different species of finches. While their bodies and colouring make them similar in appearance, each has a distinctly different, specially adapted beak.

Wildlife holidays in Galapagos offer a privileged opportunity for nature lovers to experience a truly once-in-a-lifetime encounter with some of the most incredible and unique animals on Earth. And, in this remote and beautiful part of the planet, researchers and naturalists are still learning just how astounding many of them really are. Author Plate

Your Teeth Teeth When is Braces needed

Your Teeth Teeth When is Braces needed

Being a teenage parent can be tough.

But like an adult, your job (sometimes unconditionally!) To do what you can to maintain your teen’s health. Understanding when and why your teen needs to get braces is part of it.

In this post, you will learn which signals to look for.

They Have Crowding
It’s exactly what it feels like – there’s not enough space in their mouth for all their teeth. If a cluster is not caught early enough, it can cause crooked teeth that will take longer to straighten it.

Plus, it also makes cleanliness, especially flossing, more of a challenge. To make sure your teen is really taking care of their teeth, it’s time for braces.

They Have Overbite
If you notice that your teenage front teeth seem to stick more than the bottom row of teeth, they probably have an overbite.

This is quite common, but it is accompanied by a number of health problems that you should be aware of.

They are more likely to bite their front teeth, especially if they fall or have other injuries.

Over time, untreated overbites can also lead to the need for serious dental surgery – both cosmetic and developmental. This is because it causes the jaw to grow asymmetrically.

They Have Underbite Your Teeth Teeth When is Braces needed
You can recognize this because you will see that all of your teen’s upper teeth are hidden by the lower teeth.

This is caused when there is an imbalance in the alignment and the size of the jaw. You need to treat it, because it can be difficult to chew food.

If your teen claims that they “can not handle” with how braces will look, tell them this fact: undewed underbites have been known to cause premature aging and even a somewhat skewed face look!

When They Asked Them
Sometimes, when trying to find out whether or not teeth braces are the right choice for your child, you just have to talk to them.

Although you are concerned about the health and orthodontic support provided by braces, chances are that your teen has a cosmetic reason to remember it.

If your child makes fun of their teeth, if they feel insecure about how they do it, it may be time to discuss the topic with them.

Remind your child that if braces make them feel self-conscious – and 1 in 2 teenagers say they do – that they are not alone. Your Teeth Teeth When is Braces needed

In fact, more than 4 million Americans under the age of 18 currently wear braces.

Braces are just something most people should wear – and they can even have fun choosing different band colors to match their favorite sports team or band.
